Foot Anstey McKees launches programme to widen access to legal careers
Foot Anstey McKees has announced the introduction of ‘Accelerate’, a new early careers programme designed to support first-year law students who may face additional barriers to pursuing a career in law
The new programme has been created to help address the gap between talent and access to the legal profession and is open to first-year undergraduate law students who meet one or more eligibility criteria designed to ensure it supports social mobility.
‘Accelerate’ will offer four successful participants a combination of practical work experience, financial assistance and ongoing professional support to help them build confidence and take meaningful steps towards a career in law.
They will take part in a one-week paid internship in Foot Anstey McKees’ Belfast office in June, where they will gain hands-on exposure to the legal workplace, attend skills workshops and meet some of the firm’s experienced talent.
Alongside the work experience placement, they will also receive two £500 bursaries to support them financially during their studies, as well as regular check-ins and guidance from the firm’s early careers and legal teams as they progress through university. The programme also offers potential opportunities within the firm’s early careers pathway.
The initiative forms part of Foot Anstey McKee’s wider responsible business and people strategy which aims to attract, recruit, retain and develop a diverse pool of legal talent while supporting aspiring solicitors to achieve their career ambitions.
Chris Ross, Partner and Head of Belfast office said: “A career in law can feel out of reach for many talented students, particularly those who face additional barriers early on. ‘Accelerate’ reflects our commitment to building a more diverse and inclusive legal profession.
By supporting students at the start of their journey, we hope to remove barriers, broaden access and to help the next generation of legal talent gain the experience, confidence and encouragement they need to realise their full potential.”
