Every legal career starts somewhere - often with curiosity, determination, and a desire to make a difference. For newly qualified Solicitor Alex Canning, that journey began with an interest in how different areas of law shape people’s lives.

“I was fascinated by the variety within law - from criminal and family matters to property,” Alex recalls. “I wanted to understand how it all connects and where I could make the biggest impact.”

Finding her path

During her university summers, Alex joined McKees to gain hands-on experience. The supportive environment and friendly team made a strong impression.

“That early exposure was invaluable,” she says. “It gave me a real sense of what working in a law firm feels like and confirmed that this was the right career for me.”

After graduating, Alex joined the firm full-time as a Paralegal, which gave her the chance to build confidence, take on more responsibility, and prepare for the next step - her Training Contract.

Learning through experience

“Each rotation during my Training Contract brought something new,” she explains. “Working within the Property team was a highlight - it was fast-paced, practical, and very client-focused.”

She credits the team’s guidance for helping her grow both professionally and personally.

“I was really lucky to have such supportive mentors, especially Philip McBride. His patience and willingness to share his knowledge made a huge difference.”

Advice for aspiring solicitors

Now a qualified solicitor in the Property team, Alex looks back on her journey and shares her advice for others considering law.

“Be open to every opportunity,” she says. “Each experience, even the small ones, teaches you something valuable. And never be afraid to ask questions - that’s how you learn.”

Outside of work, Alex finds balance through reading, going to the gym, and spending time with her three miniature schnauzers - a reminder that even in a demanding profession, it’s important to make time for yourself.

Looking ahead

Alex is excited for what’s next - continuing to grow her expertise, build relationships with clients, and keep learning.

“The great thing about law is that it never stands still,” she says. “There’s always something new to discover.”
